Harvey's Broiler at 7447 E. Firestone Blvd., Downey, is as well known to residents
of Downey and adjoining cities as the Stork Club is to New Yorkers. And Mr. Harvey Ortner is the man who made this restaurant a land mark in Southern California.

Mr. Ortner was born July 22, 1908, in Southhard, Okla., of Seventh Day Adventist parents. His father, George Ortner, was a native of Hutchinson, Kans., and his mother Katie (Baker) Ortner, a native of Southard, Okla. His grandfather owned a hotel and restaurant in Hitchcock, Okla.

Mr. Ortner attended elementary school in Hitchcock and was graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1927. During high school and for a year following graduation he helped manage his father's farm. Mr. Ortner marries Minnie Carter in Guthrie, Okla., on Aug. 18, 1928. Her parents lived in Oklahoma City all their lives. Minnie attended Southwest Jr. College in Texas. They made their home in Oklahoma City where Mr. Ortner worked in an assembly plant for the Ford Motor Co. He was made a superintendent in 1930 and transferred to Kansas City. Harvey Lee Ortner Jr. was born April 17, 1930

In 1934 Mr. Ortner took a job with General Motors as supervisor, and in December 1936 he was transferred to their plant in South Gate. When was came the plant specialized in repairing Diesel engines, manufacturing tanks and aircraft parts. Following the war the plant returned to automobile production, and Mr. Ortner remained until 1952.

Although Mr. Ortner was employed in another field during this period, he was also starting to realize a dream. He began by buying some land for investment. The first 1949 that Mr. Ortner became an active partner. During the next three years, four more Clock Broilers were built, operating Temple City, Pasadena, Van Nuys and Alhambra. In 1952 the partnership was dissolved.

The property for Harvey's Broiler was purchased in 1950. At that time it was the site of a large chicken ranch, a poultry sales office, and the Rio Vista Water Company. It was necessary to plan and rezone, but the dream became a reality on April 14, 1958, when Harvey's Boiler opened, and its doors have never closed since that date. In fact, keys would have to be made to lock them.

The restaurant cover 2 ½ acres of paved ground and employs 85 people full time. There is space for 350 autos to park, and car service for 98 cars. Inside, the seating capacity is 110. The steaks served are choice Eastern beef, and salads and salad dressings are made on the premises.

Mr. Ortner is a member of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce in Downey, the Downey Chamber of commerce, and the Century Club. He is associated with the Los Angeles Area Council of the boy Scouts of America and is an honorary investigator with the L. A. County District Attorney's Investigators' Association.

Mr. Ortner is a Royal Arch Mason, South Gate Chapter 98, belonging to Lodge 596 in South Gate and to the Knights Templar of Calif. No. 43. He also belongs to Al Malaikah Shrine of Log Angeles. He belongs to the Royal and Select Masters of Calif. Council No. 35. He is also the oldest member of the Candlewood Country Club which he joined in 1948. Mr. Ortner belongs to the State Restaurant Association and Southern Calif. Restaurant Association. He has been vice president, secretary and treasurer of the United Restaurant Owners' Association of Southern California.

Mr. Ortner has an outstanding management-employee relationship. Since opening
his restaurant in 1958, Mr. Ortner still has 10 of the original employees on his payroll.
He offers many employee benefits, as well as top management control by his general
manager, Mr. Emmett Roark, who has been with him from the beginning.

Miss Shari Roark, the 1963 "Miss California," is very well known as hostess at
Harvey's Broiler and has been working with both her father and Mr. Ortner since her
early teens. Sari Roark graduated from Bellflower High School in June of 1963 and
hopes to attend Long Beach State College and perhaps become a teacher unless her
contest finals bring about a new career.

Mr. Ortner enjoys golfing for a hobby. In the business world, he does not believe
in luck but rather that a man is what he makes of himself. With his philosophy he
has gone far and should be proud of his contribution to the business world and to civic
organizations.
